Professor Larry Atkins

This Week: Professor Larry Atkins!

As a Temple Universtiy Alum, I was pretty excited to speak with Larry Atkins, who works in the Journalism department at the Klein College of Media and Communication. Take a look at the non-fiction side of life below!

Name: Larry Atkins
Social Media: @larryatkins4
Genre: Nonfiction---newspapers, websites, magazines, and books

Where do you find inspiration?
Since I write nonfiction, I get most of my ideas and inspiration from reading newspapers, news websites, and watching cable news. I like to write articles that are current and timely so consuming a lot of news on a regular basis leads to many of my article ideas. In addition, there are times when I get ideas from my own observations and own experiences.

Which character in literature do you associate yourself with the most?
James Hart from John Jay Osborn Jr.'s The Paper Chase, since it reminded me of how difficult and challenging law school was and how much I feared being called on in class to summarize and discuss a case. I had one professor who made students leave the class if they weren't prepared and couldn't discuss an assigned case.

Which piece of your writing was the most entertaining/enjoyable to write? Why?

My book Skewed: A Critical Thinker's Guide to Media Bias (Prometheus Books) was the most entertaining and enjoyable to write. I spent several months on the book. It wasn't a chore because it was a topic that I found very interesting. I got to delve into things like Advocacy Journalism, Fake News, and Media Literacy. I really enjoyed interviewing experts in the field to get their insight.

Was the first novel you published the first you ever wrote? What was?
I've written two nonfiction books. My first was "Larry the Liberal Lawyer Lashes Out", which is the best collection of my published Op-Eds.  My second book was "Skewed: A Critical Thinker's Guide to Media Bias", published by Prometheus Books, which focuses on media bias, fake news, advocacy journalism, and news literacy.

When I’m not writing I’m usually…..
Teaching several courses per semester at Temple University and Arcadia University. Teaching takes up most of my time during the school year. I do most of my writing during the summer and winter break.

If you could tell or ask any character in literature or film anything, what would it be? (and where is the character from?)
I would ask David Bowman, the fictional Astronaut, the meaning of the end of 2001 Space Odyssey.

If you had lived a different life, made different choices, what would you be doing now?
Ideally, I would be a regular columnist for a major publication like the New York Times or Philadelphia Inquirer. I've written and published hundreds of Op-Eds and essays in major publications on a freelance basis, but I would really like to have a regular column. I still hope to reach that goal one day.

What are five things you couldn’t do without?
Writing, Sleep, Teaching, Temple Football and Basketball
